 Healthcare ~ THE BIG ISSUE

Welcome to our new page. This is where we will discuss the BIG issue of the day.........healthcare.

A big salute goes out today to HBO on their series on Addiction. If you haven't seen it yet, please do. It focuses on a problem affecting millions of Americans and their families.  One of the points made is the lack of Insurance coverage for sufficient time in treatment and this is something that needs to be addressed.

Many families are destroyed because of addiction and the lack of help and coverage for long term treatment. Insurance companies need to take a good look at this HBO special! There is a very moving presentation of family members testifying in front of a Government Committee, about the devastating effects of lack of adequate care.

As nurses, we see the impact of alcoholism and drug addiction on patients and families we come in contact with. Too often, we don't have the time to listen fully or teach adequately due to other pressing needs of sicker patients. Many nurses have a hard time dealing with chemically addicted patients as they don't understand the disease process. The Addiction Project web site is full of information that will assist you in broadening your knowledge base on this subject.

The Addiction Project is produced by HBO in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).
